A while back I wrote about a fantastic little book called One Magic Square: Grow Your Own Food On One Square Metre. I interviewed Lolo Houbein, the author, and we had a great chat. If you have a moment or two it really is worth reading what Lolo has to say …
Anyhow, as one thing always seems to lead to another I’ve been hearing lately of many families attempting to create a vegetable patch in their back gardens. I use the word ‘attempting’ because there’s been much laughter and frustration with some of the challenges met along the way.
With all this interest in ‘growing your own’ it seems that lots of information is required, trial and error with plants, learning to live with the local wildlife, training the family dog to stop digging up the seedlings and so on. Lolo’s book deals with many of these issues but above all she recommends starting out with a small plot - hence one magic square.
I’ve also just come across a website that seems to me to be an amazing resource for any of us attempting a vegetable patch. It provides you with a planting guide for herbs and vegetables in your climate zone in Australia. The idea is to have your kitchen garden growing and producing all year round. It’s really easy to use and the breakdown into climate zones a great idea. Check Gardenate.com out - I’m sure you’ll find it very helpful.
