How do I buy books through Women’s Nook?
- Buying books online is very easy and convenient. We use Amazon (based in the USA) and Fishpond (based in Australia). We have bought from both, and found that they are safe and efficient. When we mention a book we like, we provide a link to buy it from one of these online bookstores based on availability and price. Please note that we receive a small commission for books you buy from Amazon or Fishpond through Women’s Nook.
- RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and it’s designed to make life easier for you on the web. Suppose you have 10 sites that you like to check regularly. RSS alerts you to new content as soon as it’s published so you don’t have to remember to visit each site every day. When you subscribe to a website’s RSS, it’s like saying to them “yes, please, I’d like you to send me the most current story headlines.” You’ll receive an email in your mailbox when there are new articles to read.
Here is an example of what it looks like
How do I get started?
We would suggest that you use Firefox for RSS. It’s easy to download (if you don’t already use it) and it makes RSS a lot easier. The next thing you need is something called a ‘news reader’. This is a piece of software that checks RSS feeds and lets you read any new articles that have been added. We like Google Reader, but Internet Explorer 7 and higher have inbuild readers, so you don’t have to use another reader if you don’t want to.
The following steps will sign you up for Google Reader. Skip down to step 4 if you already have a Google account.
- Go to Google home page. At the top left of the screen you will see some options. Click on the ‘More’ button and select ‘Reader’.
- Look for the sign in box and click on the ‘Create an Account Now’. This does not create a gmail account. You can use any existing email account, and this will also allow you to access a range of other Google services.
- The next screen tells you that Google has sent you an email with a verification link. Look for that email and click on the link. You will be taken to a new screen which says your email address has been verified.
- Click on the link to manage your account profile.
- Look for the section on the right that says ‘My Services’. Reader should be listed there. Click on the link.
- Congratulations! You have now signed up for Google Reader.

Here at Women’s Nook, we believe that the Internet can make life easier in so many ways. We may be used to searching and reading about things online, but many of us find shopping a little unknown.
Have a look at www.safeshopping.org - It’s an American site full of useful information on what you should be looking out for.
If you’d like to refer to an Australian site, head to Consumer Affairs Victoria. Briefly, their top 10 tips for shopping online are:
- Check out the business and make sure you know who you’re dealing with. Look for street address, contact details and business registration number.
- Make sure you’re buying what you think you’re buying. Check product details and photos. Also make sure what you’re buying isn’t subject to any import restrictions.
- Check the cost. When you calculate the cost of a product, take into account the price in Australian dollars, any currency conversion fee imposed by your bank, and applicatble customs duty or GST, and the cost of delivery.
- Read the small print. Look for information like Terms and Conditions, Disclaimer, Legal Notices etc. to check the business’s conditions of purchase. Ask yourself: Can I return items after they’ve been delivered? Is there a guarantee on this product? Is there any product support if I need it? Is this product available to Australian purchasers?
- Protect your privacy. Be as choosy online as you are offline about what you say about yourself. Avoid businesses that ask you for any information that is not strictly neccessary for the purchase.
- Confirm your order. Before you proceed to checkout, you should be able to confirm that your order matches what you expect to receive.
- Pay securely. You should feel confident that the business has security procedures that protect your credit card details against unauthorised use at all stages of the transaction.
- Keep records. Keep copies of any paperwork associated with your online purchase. This includes receipts, and any other information, such as returns policy, that may be relevant if a dispute arises.
- Be aware that online consumers have rights just as offline consumers do. If something goes wrong with your purchase, there are steps that you can take to address the problem. You can contact your Bank and the appropriate Consumer Affairs agency if you’re unhappy with the vendor’s response to your complaint.
- If in doubt, stop. You can stop a transaction at any point up until you press the Pay or Confirm button that sends your order to the business.
How to make the most out of Google
With several billion websites available via a simple Google search, sifting through it all can be a daunting task. You’ll be able to find things more easily once you’ve learnt the ‘art’ of the Google search. Here are some tips:
- It’s best to search for multiple terms. For example, if you’re planning a holiday to Queensland, it’s best to search for holiday queensland instead of one or the other. Therefore, if you’re wanting a golf holiday in Queensland, you’d search for holiday queensland golf. There is no need to put ‘and’ between search terms.
- You’ll return even better results if you are able to search for an exact phrase. This is particularly useful when searching for names such as ‘audrey hepburn’, lyrics such as ‘when a man loves a woman’ and famous sayings such as ‘an apple never falls far from the tree’.
- Google searches are not case sensitive, so you don’t need to capitalise words for the search to work.
- Google ignores common words such as ‘where’, ‘and’, ‘how’, etc.
The Rough Guide Website Directory gives these handy hints:
Googling: thomas clark
finds pages containing both the terms ‘thomas’ and ‘clark’
Googling: “thomas clark”
finds pages containing the exact phrase “thomas clark”
Googling: thomas OR clark
finds pages containing either ‘thomas’, ‘clark’ or both
Googling: thomas -clark
finds pages containing ‘thomas’ but not ‘clark’
Googling: “thomas clark” OR “tom clark” -economist
finds pages containing either name but not the word ‘economist’
Use ~ before a word to search for synonyms and related words. For example:
Googling: ~mac
finds pages containing ‘macintosh’ and ‘Apple’ as well as ‘mac’
You can use Google to find definitions. For example:
Googling: define: dolmades
finds definitions of the word ‘dolmades’
Use an asterisk as a substitute for any word in a phrase. For example,
Googling: tom*clark
finds ‘tom frederick clark’ as well as just ‘tom clark’
