My bookclub recently went away for our annual weekend together where we always talk, laugh, read, eat, shop … and talk some more. Such fun.
Anyway, at various times of the day we’d take ‘time out’ to read The Senator’s Wife by Sue Miller. We were all enjoying it so much that every now and then some issue from the book would bubble to the surface of our conversation and we’d have to refrain - with enormous difficulty I might add - from saying anything until all of us had finished.
Toward the end of the weekend the member who had recommended the book admitted that she hadn’t quite got around to starting it! She wanted to know if we could see the parallels with Laura Bush’s life in the story. When we all looked at her blankly the alarm bells must have started ringing because after arriving home and checking her notes she sent us an email saying that we were in fact reading the wrong book!
There was much hilarity at this turn of events but it didn’t stop any of us finishing the book because Sue Miller has written an enthralling tale from the perspective of two women, one older (the senator’s wife) and the other her newly married neighbour. It’s loaded with life matters that most women find endlessly interesting - so much so that we have set aside a special meeting during January to discuss what we now call the ‘wrong’ book.
If you or your bookclub are looking for suggestions then this might be a good one to add to the list … and I promise I’ve given you the right title!
