I love SBS. I think they do a fantastic job of providing us, here in Australia, with fascinating programmes across a wide range of topics - from the really obscure to the most thought provoking and entertaining. My favourites are Food Safari, Insight, Dateline, the movies, Global Village (while I’m cooking dinner), the Tour de France and now even the cricket! I confess Inspector Rex suits me from time to time too - must be some subliminal link to the days of ‘vegging’ out and watching Rin Tin Tin instead of doing my homework.
Tonight, Sunday, 16 August 2009 Dateline is featuring a documentary on the plight of women in Afghanistan, ironically called Desperate Housewives. I caught one on SBS some months ago (I think it’s the same one) and I found it really confronting. However, it has stayed with me because it opened my ignorant eyes to the very real situation many young girls and women are in when their rights are denied and their lives become a living hell. This is on-the -ground reporting by Sophie McNeill, a young woman who has not been daunted by the monumental task of bringing this story to our attention.
The great thing about all the new technology is that you can watch this programme on the SBS website for a week after it has been shown, if you miss the broadcast, or you can simply follow a short video about it and read the background information.
