I went to the Gala Concert Performance of Breast Wishes held in Sydney in October 2008. Why am I telling you this now? Well, that was just the beginning for this wonderful ‘celebration of breasts and those that support them.’ Great line isn’t it?
Breast Wishes delivered on the celebration. It is a funny yet thought provoking ’small musical about big issues’ - full of one liners, from the likes of Wendy Harmer, witty ditties and wry observations about breasts and what they mean to us at various stages in our lives.
Puberty, cup size, bra fitting, breast feeding, mammograms and yes, breast cancer- it was all there to laugh and cry about with four wonderful actors playing mother, sisters, daughters and cousin. When I spoke with Anne Looby, producer and actor in the production, I realised that her sister’s breast cancer was the stimulus for Anne, with all her skills, to take the very personal and make it public, in the hope of making a difference for all. Such efforts are to be lauded and supported don’t you think?
We all know that it’s really hard to get through the stuff of life without humour, and looking around the audience I noticed that all the women, some obviously in treatment for cancer, were laughing with gusto. A very strong sense of sharing our womanhood came through the performance. I’m so pleased I went and thought you might like to know about upcoming opportunities to catch the show.
